Bust Within a Lotiform Niche, 6th century India: Uttar Pradesh, Gupta period, 500-599 Terracotta 8-3/4 x 9 in. (22.2 x 22.9 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1973.13.4.S © The Norton Simon Foundation Not on View Terracotta panels, including ones with aristocratic male and female figures peering out of small arched windows or niches, were an integral part of brick architecture of the Gupta period (320–c. 500). However, this small male bust was more likely used for household decoration. The narrow face, sensuous features, large earrings and wig-like hairstyle indicate a member of the urban class rather than a divine figure. |
