Following his provincial apprenticeships in Montpellier and Lyons, Rigaud moved to Paris, where he met with great success. Like his friend and rival, Nicolas de Largillière, he became a prominent portrait painter. Indeed, he was a perceptive interpreter of the human face. The sumptuous pomp and artifice that he created to surround his subjects demonstrate Rigaud's affinity for the robust qualities of the Flemish Baroque.
